Continental Falls

The Spruce Creek trail to Mohawk Lakes and Continental Falls is located about two miles south of Main Street Breckenridge, near Blue River, and is rated as 'hard' for the steep incline from Lower to Upper Mohawk Lakes. The trail is 'moderate' from the parking area at the bottom of the Spruce Creek Trail to the connection with the Wheeler Trail and is a single-track and no motorized vehicles are allowed on it. On the northwest side of Spruce Creek, a steep jeep road does allow vehicles. From the parking area on this jeep road (and it can get busy), take  a short section of the Wheeler Trail that connects to where it joins the Spruce Creek trail, the head uphill. You'll pass Mayflower Lake and then follow the trail the flanks the waterfall.

At the top of the fall, you'll reach an open meadow and in it Lower Mohawk Lake. To the south, on the east end of this meadow is a continuation of the trail - a steep section - that heads to a higher meadow and Upper Mohawk Lake.

During winter, cross-country skiing is popular on the Spruce Creek Trail. Snowshoers also use this trail, and it is trail etiquette that snowshoers stay off grooved trails made by skis. Unfortunatley, this is a very popular trail and not everyone knows this courtesy or follows it. Also.the trailhead parking fills quickly on the weekends and on holidays. Dogs are welcome and may be off leash in some areas.

The jeep road is not plowed in the winter and is the route most often used by snowshoers and skinning skiers to get to Francie's Cabin - one of the reservable huts in the Tenth Mountain Huts system.
